A total of 22 participants went head-to-head in the Stripes® Media/Celebrity Jalapeño Eating Challenge in South Texas this Thursday, Feb. 11 at the Stripes® Convenience Store on Jacaman Rd.
The participants included the beautiful 2016 Mexico Belleza Latina Stephanie Lira; 2016 Miss Texas USA Daniella Rodriguez; Radio Personalities Alex Melchor (Z-93’s “El Brodita”); Returning Champion Albert “Big Al” Martinez (Southern Distributing); Raulito (Z-93’s El Doughboy); Teresa Fonseca (Z-93’s Lady T); Alma Ferrara (KLDO TV Univision); Jesus Chuy Cortez (R Communications); Gracie Ashley Rivera (R Communications); Jeanette Martinez (LISD ITV); Abraham H. Diaz (Laredo Police Department Community Relations Unit); Miguel Angel Dominguez (Me gusta 107.3’s Mikey La Mole); Danielle Salazar (Big Buck’s Country 98.1’s Daisy Dukes); Terrance Motley (Laredo Swarm); Tavien Rosemond (Laredo Swarm); Ricardo Flores (Imagen 94.1); Lorena Ibarra (Z93’s Levantate Laredo); Daniel Galvan (Laredo Heat Soccer Club’s Coach); Joanne Aguirre (103.3 The Jackal Rock Station); Juan “Rhyno” Davila (103.3 The Jackal Rock Station); Rick “Burhan” Martinez (Laredo’s Wrestling Alliance); and Juan “Johnny Young” Arambula ( Laredo’s Wrestling Alliance).
Media/Celebrities had only 5 minutes to attempt to eat as many jalapeños as they could for a good cause.
After 5 excruciating minutes, Laredo Police Department’s Abraham H. Diaz came out in first place, taking home the Grand Champion trophy and a $100 gift card courtesy of Stripes® Stores after eating 43 jalapeños! Juan “Rhyno” Davila from 103.3 The Jackal Rock Station came in second with 41 jalapeños and Tavian Rosemond from Laredo Swarm took third place with 34 jalapeños.

The current record for the most Jalapeños eaten during the contests was set by professional eater Patrick “Deep Dish” Bertoletti with at a very hot (and painful) 266 jalapeños in 15 minutes!!! For us non-professionals, the local record was set in 1992 by Braulio Ramirez with a whopping 141 jalapeños in 15 minutes. You have to see it to believe it!
