WBCA Founding Fathers’ 5K Fun Run & Health Fair

The 2016 WBCA Founding Fathers’ 5K Fun Run & Health Fair was greeted with a beautiful crisp Saturday morning at the Laredo Medical Center, as more than 300 participants took part in the city’s premiere 5K race.

While improvements to the quality of the race have been made at a yearly basis, there has been one constant for the past three years and that is Ismael Leon. The 42-year old claimed his third straight overall title with a time of 16:54.9.
On the women’s side, Julie Cantu (32), bested last year’s second place finish by winning the women’s title with a time of 19:25.4. Both runners edged out their respective second place finishers in Luis Benavides (18:11.7) and Prissy Ferreyro (20:56.7).

The winner of the Fittest Business award was Laredo Medical Center, for its second straight year and the Fittest Government was for the Department of Homeland Security (U.S. Border Patrol), who have won the competition for the fourth straight time. The “Fittest Group Award”, is based on the number of attendees participating in a single group.
The Founding Fathers’ 5K Fun Run & Health Fair has improved thanks to sponsors like the Laredo Medical Center, who have sponsored the event for 11 years now. Other sponsors include Academy Sports + Outdoors, Miller Lite, Delta Dental and in-kind sponsors Laredo Parks & Leisure and McDonald’s of Laredo. All runners received a commemorative Fun Run Dri-Fit t-shirt and a finisher’s medal.

“The annual WBCA Founding Fathers’ 5K Fun Run & Health Fair is an event Laredo Medical Center takes much pride and joy in sponsoring each year,” said Enrique Gallegos, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer, LMC. “As the leading medical facility in Laredo, we are committed to keeping our community healthy, and we are privileged to be able to partner with WBCA in hosting this family-fun event.”

With the help of Swift Timing System the runners enjoyed lightning fast results as their time was instantly available via a flat screen TV, via text or by visiting a touch screen kiosk which printed out their time.

“We are pleased to be able to offer Laredo & surrounding areas one of the premiere 5K races in Laredo,” WBCA President Joe Castellano said. “This is an event that has been steadily growing and improving and we are excited to have great sponsors on board, such as the host Laredo Medical Center.”

Male and Female divisions were as follows: ages 11 and under, 12 – 14, 15 – 19, 20 – 29, 30 – 39, 40 – 49, 50 – 59, and 60 – and above. Special commemorative medals were given to all first, second and third place participants in each division.
