The Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association (WBCA™) has announced their selection of Douglas G. Macdonald as Mr. South Texas 2017 for the 120th Washington’s Birthday Celebration.

“It is truly an honor to be named Mr. South Texas, and I thank the WBCA and the Mr. South Texas Selection Committee for this recognition,” said Macdonald, President & CEO of Texas Community Bank. “I feel exceptionally humbled and very happy to be counted among the past recipients of the award.”

The Mr. South Texas designation is presented to a deserving individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the growth and development of Laredo and the South Texas region. The formal announcement was made during a press conference held this morning at Texas Community Bank (TCB) in Laredo. The event is sponsored and hosted by TCB.

said Joe Palacios, 1st vice President of TCB.

The Mr. South Texas Selection Committee, comprised of past presidents of the WBCA™ and former Mr. South Texas recipients who reside in Laredo, meet and discuss possible candidates. Committee members take great effort in creating an all-inclusive nominating pool of candidates from all walks of life who have made a significant impact on the area.

said Dr. Joseph Castellano, Chairperson for this year’s Mr. South Texas Selection Committee and WBCA™ Immediate Past President.

“He is South Texas’ ‘quiet benefactor.’ As a local banker and rancher, Mr. Macdonald understands what it means to be from South Texas and has generously supported Laredo and South Texas over the years. Mr. Macdonald is very deserving of this award and WBCA is proud to honor him.”

Douglas G. Macdonald was raised in Laredo, Texas and attended local public schools. He graduated from Martin High School in 1964 and later graduated from Texas A&I University in 1969.
He has been in the financial industry since 1974, and has served as the President and CEO of Texas Community Bank since its inception in 2003. He has been involved in multiple local business and civic groups, including being president of the WBCA in 1995, Jefe of Los Caballeros de La Republica del Rio Grande and also portrayed George Washington in 1986.

He has also served as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas – San Antonio Branch for 6 years and is a past president of the Laredo Development Foundation.
Mr. Macdonald has also served on the boards of the United Way, L.I.F.E. Downs, the Laredo Country Club, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Laredo, and the Laredo Chamber of Commerce.
He currently serves as a Director on the Regional Bank Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Antonio and TAMIU Advisory Board/School of Business.

The avid rancher and hunter was named Rancher of the Year in 2012 and is married to Diane S. Macdonald and have three children (Scotch Macdonald, Kendra Morales, and Reagan Macdonald) and six grandchildren.

Together with the Mr. South Texas designation, Macdonald becomes a member of a select group of national and international distinguished men and women who are honored for their dedication and countless hours of service and support to the Washington’s Birthday Celebration each year by an official induction ceremony and presentation of the Caballero Medallion.

One of the most celebrated and illustrious WBCA™ events is the Mr. South Texas Luncheon Hosted by Texas Community Bank, attended each year by dignitaries and honored guests from the United States and Mexico. This year’s luncheon will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 12 p.m., at the Laredo Country Club. Texas Community Bank generously sponsors the event.

He has been a strong supporter of many local organizations such as the WBCA™, in which he served as its president in 1995.”

The Mr. South Texas Luncheon Hosted by Texas Community Bank is one of more than 28 events in the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Calendar. Throughout the years, the Celebration has grown to be over a month long and consists of parades, dazzling pageants, fireworks, a carnival, an air show, a sizzling jalapeño festival and much more. Combined, WBCA events attract nearly 500,000 residents and visitors, and contributes an estimated $14 million every year to the local economy.

The Washington’s Birthday Celebration was recently ranked as one of the Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association (ABA) because of the excellent entertainment value it offers to both tour groups and individual travelers from around the world.
