129th Washington's Birthday Celebration Association

About

Once a year, Laredo transforms into a patriotic spectacle draped in vibrant red, white, and blue. The city’s historic streets come alive, signaling the arrival of South Texas’ grandest celebration. This unique blend of history and modern-day revelry transcends time, carrying with it 129 years of beauty and meaning that continue to captivate.

The Washington’s Birthday Celebration is a month-long extravaganza that unites the past with the present. What began in 1898 as a modest two-day festival organized by the Improved Order of Red Men has evolved into a diverse calendar of events that celebrate culture, unity, and community spirit. Central to the celebration is the homage to George Washington, revered by the Order. The tradition of Princess Pocahontas continues to shine, as each year a young woman embodies her spirit, parading down San Bernardo Avenue on horseback and receiving the symbolic “key to the city.”

The festivities showcase Laredo’s rich culture—from George and Martha Washington in colonial attire to the original La Costeña Jalapeño Eating Contest. With two parades, outdoor concerts, pageantry, and a wide variety of events, the Celebration offers something for everyone. Whether you enjoy dressing up in elegance or putting on your boots and cowboy hat, there’s always something for everyone to see and do!

As we prepare for the 129th Celebration, we also commemorate the 25th Anniversary of ByGeorge Magazine, reflecting on the commitment of sponsors, volunteers, and community partners whose dedication has helped shape this enduring Laredo tradition. Join us in Laredo, TX, for some Texas-sized fun—the Laredo way!
