Jalapeño Eating Contest
For 49 years, the original 15-minute La Costeña Jalapeño Eating Contest has been the granddaddy event of them all! The celebrated contest’s fame, which spread throughout the country thanks, in part, to a program aired by the Food Network, featuring the WBCA competition, continues to climb with brave souls clamoring to beat the heat for cash prizes. The current record for the most Jalapeños eaten was set in 2019 by professional eater Molly Schuyler at a very hot (and painful) 279 jalapeños in 15 minutes! For us non-professionals, the local record was set in 1992 by Braulio Ramirez, with a whopping 141 jalapeños. This contest proved to be a wonderful branding opportunity for our long-time sponsor, La Costeña, which has now expanded this original one-of-a-kind contest to other festivals and events.
